On the one hand, it is reported by the White House Drug Policy that 16,860 individuals were admitted to substance abuse treatment facilities of all sorts in 2007. However, according to National Survey on Drug Use and Health data in 2005-2006, approximately 77,000 Oklahoma residents reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use. It is probably safe to say that the other 60,000+ are still addicted and do not know what to do about their addictions. Unfortunately, many of these people feel like it is a lost cause and they should give up hope.
One of the complications Oklahomans face is seeking a substance abuse treatment facility that is going to handle all aspects of their addiction. Narconon Arrowhead provides a full addiction assessment to find out what steps need to be taken to get a full recovery. Many Oklahomans have addictions so severe that they will need to enter a long-term, residential drug rehabilitation program to handle their addictions fully.
âOur program is well aware of the desperate need for substance abuse treatment in Oklahoma,â states Rebecca Pool, C.A.D.C. (Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor). âNarconon Arrowhead receives calls every day from residents of Oklahoma who do not know what to do about addiction. These people enter our program and upon completion have the tools and skills necessary to go out and live a drug free life and be a positive, contributing member of society. When a person enters the Narconon program, they are hopeless and donât know where to turn. Narconon gives a person their life back and gives hope to the families of those addicted as well.â
Narconon is a non-traditional substance abuse treatment program that handles both the mental and physical aspects of a personâs addiction. With this unique approach, the program achieves over a 70% success rate of those it graduates. Narconon Arrowhead, Narconon’s premier facility, located in Oklahoma on 216 acres in Arrowhead State Park, is truly a comprehensive program for an addict who is trying to recover from addiction. The peaceful setting we offer here is like no other and our highly trained staff is 100% dedicated to helping our clients overcome their addictions. Narconon Arrowhead first opened its doors in 2000 and started delivering drug education across the nation in 2001 in an attempt to help prevent addiction before it starts. “I was lonely. I was just going to have one drink. I know that I can never just have one, and I didn’t. I barely remember what happened. I’m lucky that I wasn’t hurt too badly and that I didn’t kill someone else. My new $35,000 Saab is gone and I had to spend the night in jail. I’m so ashamed. This is the last time. I‘m done with drinking. You know the worst part? I want a drink right now! I wish I took your advice, and started the Prometa treatments.”
This was Susan’s story. Susan is a 45-year old scientist whose family is riddled with alcoholism and opiate addiction. She refused to join AA because it was “too public and too religious”.
I started seeing her a year ago when her husband brought her into the clinic. She had been drinking up to 2 bottles of wine per day for over a year and it had finally caught up with her.
She developed severe abdominal pain, but even that didn’t stop her. I put her in the hospital for a couple of days to “dry her out”. We suggested the Prometa protocol for alcohol addictions, but Susan was hesitant because it was expensive and new.
Instead she entered into therapy with under my medical supervision. We used antidepressants, along with Campral and Vivitrol, two -FDA approved, efficacious medications for alcoholism. We also entered her into the Intense Outpatient Treatment Program (IOT).
Susan tried very hard. She knew it was important. But she had to deal with severe cravings almost every day. Her drinking drastically decreased. Although she did have an occasional binge. Her work performance improved and her marriage got better.
I was overall pleased with her progress. But I had some underlying anxieties that her physical cravings might take over. And, that is exactly what happened.
Within days of her last incident we started three IV Prometa treatments, along with other medications that comprise the protocol. By the third day Susan’s head was clear and she told us that the cravings were gone. It is now about six weeks since the treatment and Susan still has “zero cravings”.
I know you’re thinking this remarkable change must be a fluke. I’d think that too if I hadn’t seen the same reaction in almost all of the patients that I have treated with Prometa. In fact, going over my data for the past 18 months I have close to an 80% success rate for my Prometa and buprenorphine patients.
Addiction is a Brain Disease
The choice to use drugs sets in motion a cascade of events that lead to long lasting and even permanent neural damage. Society used to view drug and alcohol addictions, as a social failing that can only be conquered by strong will and faith. This model was developed in the early 20th century, a time when there was only rudimentary insight into the workings of the brain and also a time when there was no methamphetamine epidemic.
Medicine has come a long way since those days, but the treatment of substance abuse is still based on twelve step programs and other social interventions. This is important, but it’s not the only thing that works.
Alcohol and drug addiction is a brain disease. And diseases are treated with medicine. Buprenorphine and Prometa are revolutionizing the treatments of the most important drug addictions: opiates, alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Buprenorphine for Opiate Addiction
Buprenorphine works by stimulating the opiate Mu receptors in the brain in a similar way to opiates themselves. Stimulation of these receptors produces pain relief and relaxation. With drugs such as hydrocodone (Vicodin and Norco), oxycodone (Oxycontin), morphine, and heroin, these effects rise steadily as the dose increases. Increasing doses lead to desensitization of the brain and the physical changes of drug addiction. Too much drug can result in overdose and death.
Buprenorphine only partially stimulates the Mu receptor, enough to eliminate drug cravings. However, it’s not enough to desensitize the brain. And, since it’s very long acting, the patient only has to use it once or twice daily.
Buprenorphine also blocks another opiate receptor, the kappa receptor, which is the cause of many withdrawal symptoms. This results in the elimination of cravings and an increased ability to slowly decrease the dose. Now patients can once again begin living normal lives.
Prometa Protocol for Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and Alcohol Addiction
Before Prometa there was no effective treatment for methamphetamine, cocaine, and alcohol cravings. There is simply nothing else that works. Without this treatment, patients feel tired, irritable, and depressed indefinitely. No wonder that almost all addicts eventually relapse.
Patients using Prometa protocol feel much better almost immediately. They almost all say that they think clearer. Even more importantly, their cravings disappear. In fact, one study of 50 methamphetamine addicts showed that almost 90 percent got significant positive effects. In my practice I see the same results. The patient stories are amazing.
And, the beauty of this treatment is that it is completed over one to 3 weeks with lasting results.
Medical Breakthrough Barriers
These treatments are not cure alls. They will only be fully successful when used as part of a comprehensive program.
There are barriers to getting these treatments to the people who need them:
Physicians must have a special federal waiver to prescribe Buprenorphine.
Physicians prescribing Buprenorphine can treat no more than 100 patients.
Prometa is only available at licensed centers and it is very expensive.
Insurance does not cover Prometa yet, pending completion of university based double blind studies.
The major obstacle, however, is the attitude of society and unfortunately, many members of the addiction treatment community towards this problem.
One thing is clear. Unless we treat physical cravings, we will never be able to get a handle on drug and alcohol addiction.

When someone is with a drug addiction, it becomes a foregone conclusion that they will have to go through a detox treatment. People who are looking at any kind of drug addiction treatment are resigned to the fact that they will need detox. But this is not the case with alcohol addiction treatment. Alcohol detox is simply not considered to be as important as drug detox. That is the reason people have several questions when they are counseled that they will have to go through an alcohol detox program.
The following are some questions that people facing the prospect of an alcohol detox have, with their answers.
Q1. Is alcohol detox really important?
Most patients of alcohol addiction ask this, and even their families do. However, the answer to this question is a positive “yes”. Alcohol detox is just as important as a drug detox treatment if not more. The first benefit that this treatment provides is that it completely detoxifies the body. The meaning of detoxification is removal of toxins, which in this case is the alcohol itself. So, when a person is made to go through an alcohol detox treatment, the alcohol present in the body of the person is removed.
This has many positive benefits on the person. One, it helps the patient to come out of the health problems that the alcohol accumulation might cause, such as the cirrhosis of the liver. It helps alcoholics to stay healthier. In most people, it has been found that they have gotten into a better body shape after an alcohol detox treatment. Also, it helps people in coming out of their urges for the substance. As long as there is presence of alcohol in the body of the person, there is always a chance that the person will have a tendency to have more of it. But with the detox treatment, the alcohol is completely removed from the body. Hence, there is a possibility that the person is completely brought out of the temptation of the substance. This is a definite positive benefit of the detox treatment.
For these reasons, alcohol detox is indeed important and must not be neglected.
Q2. How is an alcohol detox treatment program implemented?
First, the person’s condition is properly analyzed to make sure that the person does not have any physical or psychiatric complication that might pose a problem to the treatment program. Once it is decided that the person is fit enough to go through the alcohol detox treatment, he or she is made to abstain completely from the substance. In order to make things simpler, the patient is kept in an isolated treatment center so that they are away from familiar circumstances and people, thus making it better to stay away from the substance.
Within a few hours or within a day or two, the person will begin feeling the initial pangs of withdrawal, which will be characterized by a craving for the substance which becomes stronger every hour. A time might come when the patient will show violent physical reactions for want of alcohol. This is when a battery of the right kinds of medicines (depending on the patient’s condition and the program of the treatment center) will be provided so that the person can be brought out of this condition.
The withdrawal pangs are at their strongest on the second to third day of the detox. Once the person is brought out of this peak period, the withdrawal gradually goes on diminishing because the medication begins to take effect. After about a week, most patients are completely out of their alcohol withdrawal.
Q3. What about the medicines that are provided during alcohol detox?
There are two main functions of the medications that are provided during the alcohol detox. The first intention is to help the body come out of the temptation for using the alcohol. Medications such as Antabuse, Campral and Topamax are used for this purpose. Antabuse is quite effective and almost universally used. This substance can actually cause an aversion in the person for alcohol, which is quite effective in helping people come out of their addictions.
There are also medications such as Naltrexone which are provided here. These medications are used mostly to stabilize the body after the withdrawal begins to appear. The main function of these medications is to bring the body back to a normal state as much as possible.
Q4. In what cases will an alcohol detox be waived?
An alcohol detox will almost always be a part of the treatment program, but if the patient has been with the addiction for a very short time, typically under a year, then the detox program might be waived for them.

BINGE DRINKING IN AMERICA: Part I of 3 What if an American President used alcohol to buy votes to get elected? What if Federal Judges interrupted court proceedings to drink alcohol? While few would deny that alcohol has been a problem for our society, many would be astonished to know we drink less today than in earlier periods in our history. This is the story of America as seen from the bottom of the drinking glass, and the astonishing role alcohol has played in the history of our nation.
